I want to talk briefly about an often overlooked daily activity. Like many things, we get busy in the hustle and bustle of the day-to-day and forget to pause and reflect.
I want to talk to you about the power of gratitude.
Today, after a headache of a morning that included getting stuck in construction traffic, missing a morning appointment because of it, and having my whole day thrown off, I was at the gym performing my pre-workout warm-up routine. I’m lying there foam-rolling my back, with Jason Aldean’s “You Make It Easy” playing in my headphones. Then it hits me out of nowhere.
An overwhelming feeling of gratitude and recognition that my life is pretty dang awesome.
Perhaps it was the sunshine after the incessant rain we’ve had lately. Maybe it was the warm air and finally being able to go outside in shorts and a tank top comfortably. Regardless, the realization struck: here I am, 10am on a Wednesday morning, at the gym because I’ve been able to create a life that gives me that flexibility. Being fortunate enough to dedicate my time toward a group of people (clients) and a profession (coaching) that I love so much. Having awesome personal relationships with amazingly awesome people, my full health to give me the energy and strength to keep up with the demands of my lifestyle, and the innate curiosity and confidence to take one step closer, every single day, toward the person I ultimately want to become.
When I say I love my clients, I’m telling you I feel like going to my appointments is nothing short of going to hangout with my friends–each of whom allows me to satisfy my inherent curiosity about the world through their differing interests. With some we bond over our love of trying new cuisines. For some it’s our shared interest in adventure and travel, or things like good books and politics. With some we simply enjoy the shared act of growing more awesome together, and with others still we grow close for our shared love of the seemingly mundane–my guilty pleasure that is the reality show “Jersey Shore.”
This wave of gratitude was so strong, that I couldn’t help but smile throughout my entire workout. Even now, hours later, I continue to smile as the day progresses. Don’t get me wrong, I have a long list of things in my life left unfinished. Yet, we can often lose sight of just how far we’ve come since our humble beginnings.
On this beautiful day, friends, I urge you to put down your phone for a moment. Walk outside and take a deep breath of fresh air, feeling the sunlight blanket your skin. Forget all your worries, stresses, or things left unfinished. Take a moment and reflect.
Reflect on just how awesome your life is at this moment.
Because we can all use a bit more gratitude in our lives.
