How a Protein Shake Led to a Feature in Women’s Health Magazine

I’ve had work featured in over a dozen publications, including: Women’s Health, Muscle & Fitness, USA Today, and Forbes.

The untold part of that story is that it all started from a simple protein shake recipe.

I don’t even remember the recipe. Some combination of banana, pecans, and protein powder.

But it was my first contribution to an outside media source. That got the ball rolling in two very important ways:

Why That Protein Shake Mattered

First, it boosted my confidence. Once that first editor gave my work a shot, I started to believe in myself a little more. I pitched bolder topics to bigger outlets.

That’s how I landed some of the bigger features I’m in today.

The second thing is that I used that protein shake feature to get into larger media outlets. Here’s what I mean:

When I pitched that first recipe, I had nothing to show as evidence other than my credentials as a coach and my own weight loss success.

After that feature, I could pitch future publications saying, “Hey, these folks thought I had something valuable to say. Maybe you will find value in my work too.” Each new feature became additional proof that I’d turn around and use to get featured again, like a snowball effect.

The “Big Goal” Formula

Now take the concept of getting featured in media outlets and swap it for whatever goal it is you’re working on. The process is ultimately the same.

1. Start with small wins. Each one builds your confidence and your skillset. You gain the experience. You start to believe in yourself more to achieve the bigger targets.

2. Leverage your own proof. Use each of those small wins as proof for yourself. “I can do X, because I’ve already done Y.” It may not seem that important, but that internal proof matters.

When you give this process the time to take root, the compounding effect takes hold. That’s how I watched a woman I’m working with lose a hundred pounds after being overweight for 30+ years. When she started with me she thought she was broken and trapped inside a body she was fighting.

That’s how a self-proclaimed, “I’ll never love exercise” started signing up for fitness events for fun.

When you follow the formula, the only thing standing between you and the life you want is the time for it to work.

If you’re struggling with your fitness it’s likely because you’re jumping to plans and behaviors meant for someone ten steps ahead of where you’re starting. You’re skipping steps and aren’t giving the formula the time it needs.

I never would have gotten into the national media publications without that protein shake recipe. I still don’t remember what it was, but I’m glad I made it.
